For the Love of Music

As someone who started working in radio because I love music, specifically rock music, I soon came to realise that loads of great bands and songs were slipping by the wayside due to playlist committees' personal music preferences or radio station formats.

Now although there's a need for playlists and formats for certain radio stations (and we can debate this in detail in a few weeks), there's a subtantially large amount of phenomenal music that never gets mainstream exposure.

And that's why I'm so excited about this blogspot! It's not a moneymaking/publicity initiative. It's a platform for like-minded people to read and discuss and share things about rock music or any of its closely related sub-genres. I'll be posting album reviews and band/artist profiles (starting with Dashboard Confessional's 'Alter the Ending' in a few hours). And if you're in a band or represent a band or you just think I should know about a particular band to feature, please email justkoula@gmail.com We all know by the response at annual rock concerts and festivals that there are hundreds of thousands of South Africans who appreciate alternative music yet there's so little airtime given to it. The least we can do is share knowledge!

Koula leaves 5FM

After more than 7 years on air at 5FM, Koula has resigned from the national broadcaster in order to pursue opportunities with other radio stations that allow for more career growth.

Koula joined 5FM in December 2002, initially hosting the week day, 4-6am slot as well as co-hosting the World Chart Show with Ursula Stapelfeldt on Saturdays. She went on to host the 10pm-1am slot week nights, then the 7-10pm show week nights. Koula also presented the 5FM Top 40 for 5 years, before moving to weekend afternoons, hosting the 2-5pm show and finally co-hosting Sunday Stuff with Sureshnie Rider . Her resignation was effective from 25 June 2010.

During her time at 5FM, Koula - known for her love of rock and alternative music - established herself as a tastemaker within the music industry and with listeners alike. Also known for her philanthropic endeavours, Koula's Comrades Marathon campaigns have raised over R250 000 for various charities over the last 4 years.

"This is certainly not the end of my radio career, simply the end of my time with 5FM. I've been blessed to have many amazing years and experiences with the station, and to work with some extraordinary people. But it's time for change! Music and radio are in my blood and I'm excited about exploring new opportunities with other radio stations where I feel there is room for career growth," says Koula.

Koula will continue working as a presenter on Mnet's All Access (Fridays, 19:30).

Koula is represented by Tribeca Consulting for all DJ, MC and voice over bookings. For enquiries, please contact Eljean Wannenburg on (011) 678 0285 or eljean@tribecaconsulting.co.za
